집회와 축제 사이 그 어딘가에서. 

날마다 곳곳에서 각종 집회와 축제가 열린다. 수많은 감정이 뭉쳐 이루어지는 거대한 에너지를 느끼고 어우러지는 일이 생각보다 너무나 힘들어 함께하지 못하는 상황이 자주 생겼다. 그 대신 SNS 피드에 올라오는 사진을 보는 일이 늘어갔다. 이미지만으로 접하게 되면서, 어느 순간 무엇이 축제이고 집회인지 구분하기 힘들어졌다.

목숨 걸고 하는 기습 집회부터 일 년 내내 준비하는 축제까지, 그 차이와 특징들이 어느 한순간 모두 무화되고 그저 특정한 시간에 특정한 장소를 점유하면서 열리는 행사들로 보이기 시작했다. 문득 어릴 적 아빠를 따라 몇 번 보았던 서커스단처럼 느껴지기도 했다. 무리에 섞여 함께하고 싶으면서도 한편으로는 그 무리를 피하고 싶은 양가적인 감정을 작업으로 나타냈다.

장난감으로 여러 상황을 연출하여 촬영한 이 이미지들을 바라보는 동안, 관객은 과연 어떤 것을 유추하게 될까? 유명한 노래와 책, 영화의 제목을 패러디하거나, 퀴어 커뮤니티에서 쓰이는 단어들을 이용해 제목을 지음으로써 실마리를 제시하고자 했다.

Somewhere between a protest and a festival.

All sorts of protests and festivals are held every day. But I can’t always attend because it’s not easy to experience such a mushed mass of emotions and energies. Nowadays I find myself increasingly turning to photos posted on social media. As I encountered these protests and festivals only through images, at some point it became difficult to distinguish which was which.

Between illegal rallies (South Korea requires permits to assemble) and festivals prepared year-round, their differences began to fade and they appeared to be events simply occupying a specific space at a specific time. Suddenly, they seemed like a circus I saw a few times as a kid with my dad. This series expresses my mixed feelings of wanting to be part of a group while avoiding such crowds.

What will the audience infer from these photographs of staged toys that recreate various scenes and scenarios? I tried to provide clues by parodying the titles of famous songs, books, and movies, or by using queer lingo.
