Treasure Hunt(2019)

항해를 뜻하는 크루징은 은어로써 또 다른 의미를 갖는다. 특히 게이 커뮤니티 내에서의 크루징은 길거리나 공공장소 혹은 게이 대상 업소 등을 돌아다니며 섹스할 상대를 찾는 일을 지칭한다. 

크루징을 보물을 찾기 위한 여정으로 생각해보고, 나의 성적 욕망을 보물로 치환해보았다. 이 때 게이 업소 내에 나의 성적 욕망을 해결 할 수 있는 장소는 내가 찾는 보물이 숨겨져 있는 동굴이나 유적지 지하의 깊숙한 장소로 여겨진다. 이 곳에 장난감들을 나열해서 실제로 존재하지 않을 법한 (게이 업소 + 장난감) 상황을 연출하였다.

한 편, 또다른 의미의 보물찾기로서 어릴적 소풍에서 행해졌던 보물찾기를 대입해보았다. 야외 나무 밑이나 풀속에 숨겨놓은 보물들은 (성적 욕망은) 주의 깊게 보지 않으면 무심코 지나치지만 유심히 살펴보면 타인의 눈에 띄지 않게 보물을 숨겨놓는 장소가 된다. (이성애자들의 눈에 띄지 않고 성행위를 할 수 있는 장소가 된다.) 

이렇게 어릴 적 놀이들을 대입해 사회적이나 도덕적 잣대로 평가 받기를 거부하고, 아이들이 하는 놀이처럼, 순수한 욕구를 향한 크루징으로서 받아들여지기를 기대해본다.

I considered “gay cruising” as trip to find treasures. The treasures are what my sexual desire has been substituted with. The gay places are like the caves or historical sites where my “treasures” are hidden. Hunting treasures is to relieve the sexual desire. I displayed toys in “hunting” spots to make inexistent scenery, where gay places are combined with toys. 

I used to play a treasure-hunt game in the school trip when I was a little boy. I easily overlooked the secret places under the trees or in the bushes, why it is hard to find the “treasures,” or the libido. However, I could encounter unnoticed treasures when I looked into very closely. This unnoticeability makes the places thrilling and safe for gay cruising, with staying far away from the heterosexual people.

I expect people to accept the cruising as play like treasure hunt.  Cruising could be a trip to genuine desire, refusing to be judged by social or moral standards.
