Badasses & Soldiers (2018)

학창시절 남학생들의 우상, 롤모델 등은 각종 미디어를 통해 알게 된 영화나 만화 속의 캐릭터, 연예인, 운동선수 등 이었다. 미디어 속의 남성들은 더욱 힘세고 거칠고 뭔가를 당장 파괴하지 않으면 안될 것 같은 표정을 짓고 있고,사회는 그들을 앞세워 자기들처럼 되는 것이 남자다운 것이라고 끝없이 강요하고있다.

어린이 티를 벗게 되면서 남자들과 여자들이 놀거리는 점차 분리되었고 어릴 적 내가 가지고 놀던 바비인형들과 종이인형들이 언제부턴가 친구들에게 말해선 안될 놀림거리가 되어있었다.

그렇다면 사회에서 요구되는 남성성의 이미지에 그들이 말하는 여성성을 가미하면 중성적이 될까?

내가 즐겨하던 – 그들이 여자아이들 놀이로 구분 지은 – 블링블링한 스티커들을 가지고 미디어에서 강조하는 남성성에 대한 편견이 얼마나 우스꽝스럽고 쉽게 무너질 수 있는지 표현해보고자 했다.

My idols or role models were masculine characters in movies or cartoon films when I was in my school days. They were uniformly strong and rough, and always made a violent look which was supposed to destroy anything. The stereotype of these guy images has been forcing us to become one of them.

The boys’ entertainment has been separated from the girls’ one, and the Barbie dolls and other paper dolls that I used to play with became what my friends made fun of me with or what I had to hide from them. 

I wondered what would be if I added so-called “femininity” to the guy characters that the society demanded. Is it going be androgynous? I tried to express how easily or ridiculously the media-developed masculinity could be destroyed only with a few bling-bling stickers, which was supposed to be girls’ exclusive play.
